What is Spotify?

Spotify is my preferred method for listening to music.  I own a lot of cd’s and I’ve tried to download them to my phone but it’s time consuming and often I have a hard time with some of the files.  Plus, it takes up a lot of space, and on my last phone, I couldn’t get the music to go on my SD card.  Spotify is a music site much like IHeartRadio, Pandora, Google Play, and Amazon.  They all have a free version with ads and limitations and premium versions that you pay a monthly fee for.

Spotify has tons of music (see some of the exceptions below) ready made playslists with a variety of topics and genres, plus you can make your own playlists.  They also have a lot of podcasts available.   I pay for a family plan so everybody living in my house (up to 6 people) has the premium version.  It’s only $16 a month instead of the $9.99 for a single membership.

Here is my one complaint.  They don’t have lyrics available right now.  I believe they are working on getting a new provider for that feature  but I wish they would hurry up already! I love love love lyrics.

Here is the list I found of big artists not available:

  • Taylor Swift
  • Garth Brooks
  • Prince
  • Tool
  • Thom Yorke
  • Bob Seger
  • Beyonce
  • Dr. Dre
  • King Crimson
  • Joanna Newsom

I totally get why these artists don’t want to make their music available. I own all of the Taylor Swift and Garth Brooks CD’s and a few CD’s from some of the other artists already. I can’t put their songs in my Spotify playlists which is a bummer, but what can you do? Nothing, except hope they can work something out in the future.  In the mean time I’ll just have to hope to catch them on the radio sometimes.
